How Do I Find Out About Updates?

It seems they are always updating computer programs these days, and a lot of times it is important to download these updates and install them. Sometimes they fix security problems, or make things work better within the program. How will I find out when there is a Windows Vista update? If I registered when I got Windows Vista will they automatically notify me, or do I need to look online periodically to find out about updates to Windows Vista? Since it is so new I think there will probably end up being a lot of updates. I guess I will go look it up online and read more about it.
