MacLean’s hatred of fascism can be viewed here. He feels it must be obliterated at all costseven if he is forced to surrender some of his Socialist principles in the process. To a certainextent, a development in MacLean’s belief system can be viewed – during his university daysMacLean was pre-occupied with an idealistic form of socialism and by this point his ideashad moved towards a dilemma that would have an effect on much of the poetry that he waswriting around this time. The dilemma was centred on the question of whether it was better tobe a man of action or inaction and this depended on MacLean’s choice of whether to putCommunist principles above his need to rid the world of fascism. Both these options had attheir heart a sense of idealism that was typical of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Young mensuch as MacLean who had come through the university system and had been given theopportunity to widen their knowledge of philosophy and politics had formulated ideas andwere now finding their standpoints put to the test.
