How can I avoid this?

I really want to buy a new home, and will definitely need to take out a mortgage in order to do this. However, I am worried about all the foreclosures I have been hearing about lately. I don’t want this to happen to me. What do I need to know and do in order to make this unlikely? I am wondering if I should take out a smaller home loan and get a less expensive home so that I will be able to save more in case of an emergency. I wouldn’t want to lose my home for any reason that I could prevent.
