Parade with Chinese Gongs
August 23, 2008 7:16 am ArtsRecently I was watching the parade in Chicago’s China Town. While their was the usual firecrackers and costumed parade walkers representing different parts of China I was most interested in the large group of Chinese marchers playing Gongs. These Chinese Gongs were made out of brass and were in a variety of sizes and banged on by individuals as they marched on bye. Their was also a row of gongs that were attached on steel bracket and the player could hit all tem at once or a couple at a time. The sound was quite unusal and fit the mood of the parade just perfectly in celebration of the Chinese New Year.
